The talented Azzedine Alaia, though notoriously press-shy, couldn't escape the limelight even if he wanted to.
Remember Cher Horowitz's iconic line "This is an Alaia!" from the cult classic film Clueless? That single on-screen moment catapulted Alaia into pop culture's fashion lexicon, making his name known even to those with no prior interest in fashion.
Beloved by A-listers, Alaia's designs have adorned the likes of supermodel Naomi Campbell, who affectionately referred to him as "Papa," and global superstar Rihanna, who frequently graced red carpets and performed on stage in his pieces. From Lady Gaga to the Kardashians and even former First Lady Michelle Obama, the Alaia brand was a staple in the wardrobes of the world's most influential figures.

Sadly, in November 2017, the Tunisian designer passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. But despite his absence, the spirit of Alaia lives on.
Ahead, we relive the history of the man, his brand, and the legacy that he has left behind, including the must-have pieces from the brand.
A Brief History of Azzedine Alaia
Azzedine Alaia, born in Tunisia on June 7, 1939, was renowned for his distinctive body-con designs and discreet luxury, establishing himself as one of the most esteemed designers of his era. It’s because of his skin-tight silhouettes using stretchy jersey fabrics that celebrated women’s bodies that he earned the well-deserved moniker "King of Cling."

In his early years, he studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, he moved to Paris in 1957, where he would work for fashion giants like Christian Dior and Thierry Mugler. Alaia's career soared when he opened his atelier in the late 70s, dressing fashion icons like Greta Garbo and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild. His stretchy body-conscious silhouette gained popularity in the mid-eighties, and his partnership with the Prada group in the year 2000 brought a resurgence in his popularity.
Alaia was known to be a fiercely independent designer, and he made sure it stayed that way. Despite being owned by the Richemont group, he maintained his independence and vision for his fashion house. He seldom adhered to the official show calendar, opting to unveil his work when he believed it was ready, rather than when pressured by retailers or the press.
He was unapologetically honest, never shying away from speaking his mind, even if it meant stirring up a bit of controversy. “I don't like his fashion, his spirit, his attitude," he once said about Karl Lagerfeld. He even had a falling out with Anna Wintour in 2009 after his work wasn't included in the Met's Model As Muse exhibition—which Anna had organized. He told Virgine magazine once, “[Anna] runs the business very well, but not the fashion part. When I see how she is dressed, I don't believe in her tastes [for] one second." Clearly, Alaia wasn’t one who cared much about controversy nor was he overly worried about what others might think of him and that’s what made him one of the greats.
Following Alaia's passing, the fashion world wondered what would become of his eponymous brand. It wasn't until 2021 that Belgian-born designer Pieter Mulier, known for his work alongside Raf Simons, was appointed to carry on Alaia's legacy.
