In an industry built on beauty standards, Agie Stockel strides against the current. Since emerging victorious from the Preview Model Search in 2018, the 27-year-old has become a face for brands such as HA.MU, Yong Studio, and SOLA.
While her successes may be indicative of the modeling scene's shift in perspective, Agie knows that there is still work to be done to ensure genuine inclusivity. In a chat with Preview, she opens up about being a plus-size model in the Philippines and shares the lessons she's picked up so far.
Preview Go-See: Agie Stockel
Hi, Agie! How did you get your start in the modeling industry? Tell us the story of how you got “discovered.”
"I’ve been modeling [since] 2017 for an independent plus-size clothing brand Exztra Plus. The funny thing was that they contacted me while I was looking through their social media account to buy a swimsuit."

"In 2018, the Preview Model Search took place. Although I had no intention to participate, I applied because a friend of mine wanted to give it a try and needed someone to join with them. Sadly, she forgot to send in her application (due to our deadlines in fashion school), so I was the only one who received a callback for the top 20. I was fortunate enough to make it into the Final 10. And the rest is history! I still can’t believe that all of these things happened and I’m really grateful for everything."
What do you love the most about being a model? Would you say being a model is your dream job?
"[What I love most about being a model is that] I can represent people with the same size or build as me, regardless of their status, age, or gender. [There are] also kids out there who can now feel [represented] and included, which was unusual in the past, but I’m very glad that things are changing. It feels good to be a beacon of light in a business that is extremely objective about how you look. I am also grateful to the people and brands I have worked and formed [a sense of] trust with, [as these have led to] meaningful and true friendships."

"I never expected to be modeling because my parents wanted me to go to medical school. After finishing my BS Biology course, I pursued my passion for painting by attending fashion school because I've always been intrigued by the beauty of art. [I was also inspired by] my grandmother who used to embroider garments. I always pictured myself working [behind the scenes in] the fashion industry. I never anticipated it to be the other way around, and I have no complaints."
What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry?
"Throughout my childhood, I was ridiculed for being unusual because of my hair color, which resembled corn silk. Growing up, I was a late bloomer, and changes in my physique began to surface one by one, leaving me completely clueless. As a result, I was often mocked for my size and physique. I was even catcalled by my male classmates. Because of all of this, I [grew to be] really concerned about how I look even after college.
"But being surrounded by open, supportive, and accepting people in fashion school helped me understand the body I'm in. It taught me how to wholeheartedly embrace and appreciate my physique since it's been taking care of me ever since I was born, and I ought to be grateful to it."

"As one of the few curvy [models] in the Philippines, I've received a lot of comments about how I look, as well as a lot of rejections [since I don't] fit the standards here. I was always the oddball. It took me a long time, [but I've grown to] to love my body, so why would I crumble [because of] the words of people around me? I've been looked up and down, and I've received snarky remarks, but I've learned to brush them off because, for starters, we're all biologically diverse. We don't have the same blueprint in terms of body size."
"Also, some [companies] try to promote [body positivity], but in reality, they merely want to join the bandwagon, and only preach false inclusivity. On the other hand, I'm grateful to brands who do the research and take the time to learn more about this issue."
What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?
"Every [project I've done] is noteworthy because I did not expect some of these brands to get me. My mindset has always been that whether they get me or not, I will be grateful for the experience and will look forward to what happens along the way."

"I would say that some of the most memorable moments [include] seeing your work [published in print]. It makes me crack a smile and [has me astonished] that this is actually happening to me. It's a 'pinch-me' moment since I can see the actual outcome of our hard work in person."
How do you see your career progressing in the future? Do you have a dream modeling gig?
"I can't say for sure, but I'm simply going along with what comes next and trusting the process. Every job offer I've received has been a dream project. I love working with brands that share the same principles and visions I have in mind. [It would be nice to have] a shoot with cats in the future!"
What’s your go-to model-off-duty look?
"I typically wear normcore ensembles, which are usually from the menswear section. They're oversized, baggy, and comfy to wear and move in all day. I also prefer apparel with pockets, as well as bags that can hold a lot of items while remaining minimal in style. Sneakers, pants, and oversized shirts are staples in my everyday wardrobe. Because of the nature of my profession, I usually go barefaced to allow my skin to breathe from all of the makeup and products. Claw clips are a must for my hair."

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?
"A great model maintains their professionalism even when faced with a crisis or unforeseen circumstances. [They] treat everyone with respect, regardless of status, and are welcoming to the people [they work with.] A simple smile will not cost you anything. [We have to] remember that we don't know how other people are feeling on any given day, so being kind to them will help and brighten their day."
"[A great model is also] always on time and comes prepared. [We should] value people's time since it says a lot about our work ethic. Don't make people wait for you [because] everyone is replaceable in this profession. Respect the clothes that are provided [because] a lot of work has been poured into [every] garment, and the designer or brand will appreciate it if you handle it with care. Finally, [we shouldn't] hate on each other. It's difficult enough to be in this field; the least we can do is to support one another."

What’s your message for people who want to get into modeling?
"It may sound harsh, but modeling is not for everyone. What works for some may not work for you. It is a cutthroat industry, and you may feel alone and secluded [because of] the pressure from everyone around you."
"Modeling is not all about glitz and glamor as it is a mentally and physically demanding job. Standing in lengthy lines for castings, waiting a lot, [suffering] body pains and bruises (a couple of which were blisters from wearing ill-fitting shoes), [facing] endless rejections and criticisms [are all part of the job.] It's up to you to handle all of this, which is not easy. Modeling isn't about you—it's about how you present and bring the garments to life."

"When you do get jobs, remember that your biggest competition is yourself, not everyone else. Different jobs have varying levels of difficulty. Be careful who you make friends with. They will either lift or bring you down. Once you find the right circle of friends, keep and treat them as family. They will always have your back no matter what."
"You'll have your own time to shine. Don't be discouraged if you don't acquire a specific job because numerous opportunities will unlock themselves [if they are] an appropriate match for you. Be yourself and don't become addicted to trends. Fashion is constantly changing, and you should be adaptable to change."
