Superstars, Stan Smiths, and Yeezys—Dive into the stories behind Adidas' most iconic designs.

Think of Adidas, and instantly the iconic three stripes come to mind. From humble beginnings in a small German town to becoming a staple in every sneaker rotation, the brand has crafted a legacy that’s bigger than sports. It’s worn by Olympians chasing gold, musicians setting trends, and everyday people redefining casual style. Few brands have the versatility and cultural impact that Adidas carries.

The History of Adidas

Adidas’ story traces back to 1924 in Herzogenaurach, Germany, when brothers Adolf (“Adi”) and Rudolf Dassler launched the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. Their objective was to craft high-quality athletic footwear that could enhance an athlete’s performance, and their shoes quickly earned acclaim. They gained international spotlight when American track and field athlete Jesse Owens donned their designs at the 1936 Olympics and claimed four gold medals—an iconic moment in sports history.

However, the Dassler brothers’ partnership was not built to last. Personal and professional conflicts led to their split in 1948, resulting in two competing brands: Puma, founded by Rudolf, and Adidas, established by Adi in 1949. Adi Dassler wasted no time in setting Adidas apart, trademarking the now-famous three stripes. Far from being a mere design decision, the stripes were engineered to deliver extra stability and support, enhancing the shoe’s structural integrity. This innovation embodied Adi’s philosophy of merging form and function—creating footwear that not only looked sharp but also empowered athletes to perform their best.

Over the years, Adidas expanded its expertise across sports, from developing advanced running shoes to tennis gear, claiming its position as a leader in athletic performance and innovation.
