You won't be seeing your friends' likes anymore.

Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has hidden likes "to better protect" the privacy of its users roughly 10 days after it allowed adult and sexual content on the site under Elon Musk's direction.

According to the X's official Engineering account, two major changes to the platform's like function are set to take effect starting Wednesday, namely;

  • Users can still see the posts they liked, but other users will not be able to tell
  • You can no longer see who liked someone else's post

"Like count and other metrics for your own posts will still show up under notifications," the post said. This means you can like all the posts you want, but no one else can see if you liked said posts. In a similar vein, you can no longer see who liked a particular post, even if the account is public. So even if one post has one like, you will no longer be able to click "likes" to see who favored that post. You can still see who liked your posts, though.

The like tab will still be available on your account, but has since been removed from other people's accounts. Say goodbye to seeing someone's likes-at least until X decides to bring it back or begins offering a paid service that will let you see someone's likes.

Likes on Twitter

Likes have been a key part of X even back in its Twitter days, when it was still a golden star instead of a pink heart. After Musk's aqcuisition of the blue-bird social media platform in April 2022, the option to hide likes was made available to Premium users in a September 2023 upate, ideally with the intent to prevent the raunchy content people liked from leaking out. "Keep spicy likes private by hiding your likes tab," the update then said.
