Filipinos aren't feeling as generous as they used to be, if we were to believe in the findings of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF)'s World Giving Index 2023. The shift has been so drastic that the country had dropped from the 20th spot all the way down to 98th in just a year!

World Giving Index 2023 surveyed 147,186 people from 142 countries to come up with the results. Each individual respondent was asked about donating money, aiding strangers, and volunteering for various organizations. The global average score was found to be at 39.
In the Philippines' case, its median score in the World Giving Index 2023 is only 34. According to the results, 57 percent of Filipinos said they have helped a stranger while 34 percent have concluded that they have had some form of volunteer work in the past. Only 12 percent said that they had donated to charitable causes.
Just last year, the Philippines was ranked 20th. It had placed 65th and 33rd in the years prior. This stark decline comes during a time when Social Weather Stations surveys showed that 30 percent of Filipinos have said that their quality of life has decreased over the past year. Out of this, 41 percent said theirs remain the same.
Operating from the United Kingdom, the CAF has been publishing the World Giving Index for roughly a decade. One of the major developments concluded in the 2022 study was that only four of the top 10 most generous nations this year are classified as high-income countries. In 2018, that number was around seven. During the peak of the pandemic, seven out of the 10 countries had been classified as low- and middle-income economies.
Indonesia has again taken the top spot, doing so for the past five years now. This year, it tallied a score of 68. On the other end of the spectrum, Poland has been named the least-giving country in the World Giving Index for 2023 with a median score of just 15.
