Do you remember when the Lensa artificial intelligence (AI) app was all the rage back in 2022? Well, it's ChatGPT's turn and while it has already made its way into our daily vocabulary, it is currently getting a lot of attention—and flak—than usual.
READ: The Controversial ChatGPT Feature
American AI research organization OpenAI recently introduced 4o Image Generation—its most advanced image generator yet. The generator is meant to be tried via ChatGPT and is expected to yield beautiful and useful results.
Furthermore, OpenAI expounds its function as "unlocking useful and valuable image generation with a natively multimodal model capable of precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs."
Among the many prompts associated with this new feature, one emerged as the most controversial—Studio Ghibli.

With Studio Ghibli being such a globally beloved animation studio, it is no surprise that people from all over the world were quick to use ChatGPT to generate Studio Ghibli-style images. As a matter of fact, even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman updated his X profile photo with a Ghibli-inspired generated image. In addition, the recent influx of netizens on ChatGPT has caused the platform to crash.
READ: Studio Ghibli Copyright Concerns
Unfortunately, a lot of backlash is currently being thrown at OpenAI, citing copyright concerns as the main issue. A recent New York Times article asked the question of whether people who love Studio Ghibli should be given the capability (through ChatGPT) to recreate it. Interestingly, OpenAI declined to respond when asked whether it has the license to use the studio's art style.

The Associated Press amplified the conversations on the ethical issue of AI tools that are trained to generate copyrighted creative works, which also affects the artists behind the styles themselves.
Case in point, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki once expressed his disdain over AI animation during an AI demo in 2016. "I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself," said Hayao.
As of writing, Studio Ghibli has yet to release a statement regarding the matter.
