In the age of streaming, subscription-based services' original content are often kept under the lock and key of licenses. However, viewers may have noticed that several HBO Originals have now landed on Netflix’s screens. But what exactly is the reason behind the unexpected crossover?
READ: Why HBO Original Shows Are Streaming on Netflix
While HBO has Max in the United States and HBO Go in Asian countries like the Philippines, several HBO Originals including Insecure and True Blood are now streaming on Netflix.
The move was first reported in June, when HBO's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery struck a deal to syndicate certain HBO shows on the Netflix platform. The two entertainment competitors have landed an agreement to loan HBO content on Netflix, reportedly to receive a financial boost.
The first HBO title that fell under the agreement is the Issa Rae-starring Insecure, which ran for five seasons and completed in December 2021. This is followed by series including miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the 2001 series Six Feet Under, and the Dwayne Johnson-starring Ballers. Meanwhile, hit vampire series True Blood streams on Netflix for those outside of the US.
According to Deadline, the shows are said to be distributed on a non-exclusive basis, which means that they may still be streamed on services like HBO Go. It’s a considerable move for HBO, given that Netflix is said to be their largest competitor. But here’s hoping we get to see more crossovers from these two heavyweights!
