Martin Ignacio Paez Lorenzo was born to basketball player and corporate executive Moro Lorenzo and wife Dr. Alicia Paez. His brother is Cito Lorenzo, a former chief of the Department of Agriculture who served during Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's administration.

Lorenzo attended Ateneo de Manila University in 1986, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in management engineering. He then obtained his master's in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1990.

2. He used to run and operate Del Monte Philippines and Pancake House.

In an interview with the Inquirer, Martin said his family used to run and operate Del Monte Philippines. "I, together with my family, used to run and operate Del Monte Philippines. But that was in food supply and distribution… I am not a chef and the truth is, I don’t even know how to make a pancake now [as] I am a finance person… What I do know is the discipline of running a business," he said.

In 2000, he acquired Pancake House and took over the helm of the chain. Pancake House was awarded by the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) as the most promising Filipino franchise of the year two years later. After Pancake House was acquired by Max's Group of Companies in 2014 for more than P3 billion, Lorenzo went into sugar milling by buying shares of Central Azucarera de Tarlac Inc. (CAT).

These days, the entrepreneur counts himself as the chairman, president, or CEO of over 18 companies.

3. He's a family man.

Martin is married to Leah De Leon Lorenzo. Together, the couple has 12 children. Having a large family became a motivation for the entrepreneur, who realized he couldn't rely on a few businesses to support his family.

"I said to myself then that I cannot just rely on the family business which is Del Monte and our banana business in Davao. I had to have my own [business] for my children because there’s just too many grandchildren," he told Inquirer.
