In a world where financial decisions are often scrutinized and budgeting feels like a daunting task, there's a new entertaining trend taking over social media: Say hello to "Girl Math"!

You’ve probably heard of it before, or maybe you’ve even partaken in it (I know I have). But what exactly is girl math anyway? Ahead, we break down the basics of this phenomenon—welcome to Girl Math 101!

What is Girl Math?

At its core, girl math is a playful take on how one handles their finances. It's about bending reality to make your financial choices look better than they actually are. Whether it's treating anything under P100 as virtually free or believing you're saving money by splurging on a sale item, girl math is all about the lighthearted side of money management.

Much like most trends, the term "girl math" gained popularity on TikTok, thanks to content creators like Samantha James (@samjamessssss), who went viral with over three million views on her video for her take on it. As she explained, "Anything under $5 feels like it doesn't count as spending," or “[If I] return something at Zara for $50 [and] bought something else for $100, it only cost me $50”, and, “Even like tickets that I buy months in advance, I show up to the concert and I'm like, 'this was like a free concert, right?”

Hundreds of netizens have commented on Samantha’s video sharing their take on girl math, too.

"Spend an extra £20 to avoid paying £5 delivery. Girl Math," wrote one netizen.

"I would NEVER spend $500 at Amazon but I will happily spend $100 five times. Girl math," commented another.
