Anyone who’s been on social media lately has probably seen or heard the phrase “Sobrang Latina!”—on content about makeup transformations, OOTDs, or just people feeling themselves. But where did the phrase come from?
Like many viral moments, this one started with a TikTok video. Filipino content creator Sesable posted a clip on January 11 where she admired her makeup in the most extra way possible: “Sobrang Latina! Hayop ka talaga. Ang ganda-ganda mo.” She goes on to say a lot more, but we'll let her do the talking:
Where Did the Viral "Sobrang Latina!" Phrase Come from?
From there, the phrase took on a life of its own. What started as a way to hype up makeup transformations has now become an all-encompassing catchphrase for anything and everything fabulous. Even local celebrities like GMA star Kris Bernal, content creators Mimiyuuuh and Nurse Even, comedian Buboy Villar, and actress Althea Alban have hopped on the trend.
Bronzed skin, bold brows, and sultry lips often come to mind when we think of Latina beauty standards. Beyond this focus on appearance, though, is a feeling that the line encourages in people—to be confident, charming and, well, act like a star of your own telenovela. And with Women's Month just around the corner in March, the timing couldn't be better.
Anything can be "Sobrang Latina" if you say it with enough conviction—i.e. with a shout!
