Ilona Chernobai, a Ukrainian fitness trainer with over one million followers on Instagram, graced the Cannes red carpet in a striking blue and yellow dress that symbolizes the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Upon ascending the Palais steps, she revealed bags of fake blood hidden beneath her gown, pouring them all over herself to create a dramatic visual spectacle.

Security swiftly intervened, promptly escorting Ilona off the red carpet.

Undeterred, the influencer took to her Instagram account to explain the motive behind her act of protest. In a translated post shared by Variety, she wrote, "The action was in support of the occupied territories and our people who live there."

Ilona expressed her determination to use her platform to shed light on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, explaining, "On the red carpet of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, I came out in a dress in the colors of our flag and poured red paint on myself. I used my chance and with this act I reminded what is happening in Ukraine!!!"

Ilona's bold protest not only garnered attention from the festival attendees but also made headlines globally. However, she voiced concerns about the limitations she now faces on her Instagram account. She shared, "Unfortunately, I can no longer post all the events in stories, like many bloggers, because Instagram destroys everything! But my page is under threat of deletion!"

Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude that her act received widespread media coverage, emphasizing the importance of keeping the spotlight on Ukraine. She wrote, "I am very glad that my act spread all over the world media! People should not forget about us!"

Despite these personal repercussions, she remains steadfast in her belief that her protest was worthwhile, stating, "I am with Ukraine in my heart. I did what I had to do!"

This incident occurs against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, prompting the Cannes Film Festival to ban Russian delegates at the event last year. In a statement, the festival declared, "We will not welcome official Russian delegations nor accept the presence of anyone linked to the Russian government." As the 2023 edition unfolds, the Ukrainian League of Cinemas has called on festival participants to halt all business with Russia, citing concerns about supporting "terrorism." This has led industry professionals to grapple with the moral dilemma of working in the country versus the financial benefits associated with releasing films in the lucrative Russian market.

The protest by Ilona Chernobai serves as a powerful reminder that the world of fashion and film is not immune to the socio-political issues affecting nations. As the Cannes Film Festival continues, the event becomes a platform for important discussions surrounding the balance between artistic endeavors and the moral imperative to take a stand against injustice.
