Cherry blossom season is one of the most magical times of the year. Every spring, it transforms Japan and South Korea into breathtaking pink wonderlands. The delicate blooms, though fleeting, are a spectacle that attracts travelers from all over the world. But if a trip abroad isn’t in the cards for you this year, don’t worry—you won’t have to fly out to experience the magic of sakura season.
Right now, Palawan Cherry Blossom Trees—also known as Balayong—are in full bloom in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), and they’re every bit as dreamy as their famous counterparts in Japan.

More netizens have been sharing their cherry blossom sightings as well, with many likening the scene to a mini Tokyo or Seoul. One user posted on TikTok, saying, “Balayong trees in full bloom! The Philippines’ own 'Palawan cherry blossoms' are painting BGC pink—catch them before they’re gone!”
Another amazed netizen who showcased a bird's-eye-view of the park captioned, “May ganito pala dito.”
What Are Palawan Cherry Blossoms?
The Balayong Tree (Cassia nodosa) is the Philippines’ answer to Japan’s sakura. While they may look alike, Balayong belongs to the Fabaceae family—the same group as the Golden Shower Tree (Cassia fistula), which is known for its vibrant yellow blooms. Native to the country, these trees thrive in warm climates and bloom around this time of the year.

In Palawan, where the tree is most commonly found, an entire Balayong Festival is dedicated to celebrating its bloom. Now, Manila’s urban jungle is getting its own share of this stunning display.
If you want to see these rare blooms in person, head over to Track 30th Park in BGC—but hurry, because just like in Japan, the blossoms don’t last long!
