A statement from local film studio Star Cinema said that Rewind, an entry in the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival, is now the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time. The movie, which stars real-life husband and wife Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, has reportedly earned P845 million since it was released Christmas Day 2023.
Rewind has now surpassed the domestic box office earnings of Hello Love Goodbye, which starred Alden Richards and Kathryn Bernardo, and which previously held the record of all-time top-grossing Filipino movie.
That got us thinking about which other Filipino films are the highest-grossing of all time. Local studios have traditionally been stingy when it comes to sharing box office receipts, but it seems they’ve been more than happy to publicize better-than-average numbers, especially in recent years.
Looking at the list, the box office kings and queens are clear. Vice Ganda stars in at least nine of the top 25 highest-grossing Filipino films of all time. These are: The Super Parental Guardians, Fantastica, Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad, Beauty and the Bestie, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy, and Sisterakas, The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin, and The Mall, The Merrier.
Following closely is Coco Martin, who is topbilled in five films: The Super Parental Guardians, Beauty and the Bestie, Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles, Ang Panday. Other stars with multiple films in the top 25 highest-grossing movies of all-time list are Vic Sotto (My Bebe Love: KiligPaMore, Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles, My Little Bossings), Kathryn Bernardo (Hello Love Goodbye, The Hows of Us, Barcelona: A Love Untold), Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano (My Ex and Whys, Alone/Together), and Daniel Padilla (The Hows of Us, Barcelona: A Love Untold).
Looking at the rankings by film studio, Star Cinema, the film production outfit of ABS-CBN, is the runaway winner, having produced or co-produced 19 out of the top 25. It also has the honor of releasing the current highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, Rewind, alongside APT Entertainment and AgostoDos Pictures. Interestingly, Rewind stars Dantes and Rivera, two actors who are traditionally more identified with GMA Network, ABS-CBN’s erstwhile rival.
It's also interesting to note that, with the exception of one (2011’s The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin), all 25 of the highest-grossing Filipino films of all time were released over the last 10 years. Fourteen of the films were entries in the annual Metro Manila Film Festival, which starts on Christmas Day and traditionally the most profitable season for local films. The non-MMFF films are Hello Love Goodbye, The Hows of Us, The Super Parental Guardians, A Second Chance, Starting Over Again, It Takes a Man and a Woman, Alone/Together, Exes Baggage, The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin, Bride for Rent, and Barcelona: A Love Untold.
