The Tortured Poets Department runs in the family tree, so it seems! In a recent report, a genealogy company revealed that superstar songwriter Taylor Swift is actually related to esteemed 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson.

In a study unveiled by The Today Show, genealogy company Ancestry reported that the pop star and the poet are sixth cousins, three times removed. According to the group, both writers descend from a 17th-century immigrant from England. The British national is Taylor’s 9th great-grandfather and Emily’s 6th great-grandfather, who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut in the United States.
“Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line,” Ancestry explained.
The 34-year-old singer was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania, United States, and later moved to Tennessee as she worked her way up the music industry. Meanwhile, Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1830. While she had lived her entire life in Amherst, Emily had family members who resided in Philadelphia, particularly her second cousin Eliza Coleman. The poet is a notable figure in American literature, with works that defied conventional poetic rules during her era.
Emily has even made her way into Taylor’s own works, with many fans speculating that the poet inspired her album Evermore.
The singer had also previously referenced the poet during an acceptance speech for the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International. “If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre,” she said. Talent is in the family DNA, that’s for sure!
