Recent political developments in South Korea might have you second-guessing your plans to visit the country, but the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has stepped in to say travelers may proceed, albeit with caution.
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law, citing alleged threats from "anti-state" forces—a move that was swiftly repealed within six hours by the National Assembly. No travel restrictions were implemented following the martial law declaration.

DFA Guidelines on Travel to South Korea Amid Political State
DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega told Super Radyo DZBB that Filipinos are free to travel to South Korea as long as they remain mindful of the uncertainties that could happen.
“Di namin kayo sinasabihan na wag na kayo pumunta pero kailangan niyo ng maintindihan na sa South Korea, ganyan 'yung politics diyan, palaging may maaaring mangyari at any moment,” De Vega said.
He also emphasized the importance of vigilance for travelers. “Be very circumspect pag nasa abroad kayo. Wala namang gera eh. Extra precaution lang kung itutuloy nila ‘yung trip nila.”
According to de Vega, there are about 68,000 Filipinos in South Korea, including those documented and undocumented, but none are particularly concerned about the recent political developments: “Hindi naman nagpanic mga Pilipino. Sinabihan lang ng embassy na mag-take care at sumunod sa direktibo ng local authorities.”

Other countries like the United Kingdom have issued similar advice, urging citizens to remain cautious while maintaining that South Korea is not facing widespread unrest.
Although martial law has been lifted, public demonstrations have been reported in key locations such as Gwanghwamun, Samgakji (near the Presidential Office), and Yeouido (near the National Assembly). Further protests are also expected nationwide through mid-December.
