Filipinos love South Korea, and the Land of Hallyu seems to love us back! The South Korean Embassy in the Philippines just announced a new set of "simplified" visa requirements for those aspiring to visit Seoul and its other provinces. Put all those fussy financial documents aside, travel bugs. You might not need them anymore, so long as you fit into these categories set by the South Korean government.

Check out the simplified requirements for a South Korean Visa this 2024:

It's no secret that compiling your financial documents, like income tax returns (ITR), bank certificates, and bank statements can be one of the most tedious parts of the visa application process. In a new scheme announced by the Embassy of South Korea in the Philippines, some Filipinos no longer need to worry about submitting financial documents when applying for a South Korean visa.

Here are the individuals exempt from filing financial documents when applying for a South Korean visa:

According to the announcement, the following individuals no longer need to include bank certificates, bank statements, and ITRs on their applications starting February 1, 2024 until December 31, 2024:

Elected Politicians

This category includes members of the Senate, members of the Congress, Governors, Provincial Board Members, and Mayors (City or Municipality). The courtesy also extends to their immediate family members such as their parents, spouse, minor children (applicable for adult children who can prove to be students through documents), and their spouse's parents.

Note that other documents, such as proof of relationship, are required.

Government Officials

This category includes persons with a rank higher or equal to Assistant Secretary of the Executive Branch of the Philippine Government, and Brigadier General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines/Philippine National Police, excluding those in acting duties.

The courtesy also extends to their immediate family members such as their parents, spouse, minor children (applicable for adult children who can prove to be students through documents), and their spouse's parents.

Instead of the required financial documents, an original Certificate of Employment that specifies the affiliated organization, working period, position, and salary is required. For immediate family members, a proof of relationship is required.

Professional License Holders

Those holding a valid PRC license ID (IBP ID for lawyers) with a profession of physician, dentist, lawyer (including judges and prosecutors), certified public accountant, pharmacist, and veterinarian.  They simply need to submit a copy of their PRC or IBP ID for validation.

The courtesy also extends to their immediate family members such as their parents, spouse, minor children (applicable for adult children who can prove to be students through documents), and their spouse's parents. Note that for the exemption to apply to family members, a proof of relationship will be required.

BDO Gold or BDO Elite Credit Card Holders

BDO Gold or BDO Elite Credit Card Holders, excluding supplementary cardholders, are also exempt from filing financial documents when applying for a South Korean visa.

Here are the specific BDO Gold and BDO Elite credit cards covered by the exemption:

As with the other exemption categories, this courtesy is also extended to immediate family members such as their parents, spouse, minor children (applicable for adult children who can prove to be students through documents), and their spouse's parents.

Instead of financial requirements, documents such as an original certificate of employment, a copy of the front of the credit card with complete information, and their latest three months' credit card account statements are required. Immediate family members are also instructed to submit proof of relationship.

Can I still submit financial documents for my South Korean visa application even if they aren't required?

Though the financial documents are no longer required, the Embassy states that applicants who fall under these categories are still welcome to submit them if they feel this will help their visa approval. Please note that only the stated financial documents can be replaced or omitted. Other general visa application documents such as a valid passport, visa forms, travel insurance, employment documentation, and travel itineraries are still required.

The new simplified visa application requirements are another change to the South Korean visa application process. Other changes include creating the Korea Visa Application Center, where all visa-related processes will be handled, and allowing visa applicants from Mindanao and Palawan to mail in their applications.
