These days, Hallyu isn’t limited to South Korea’s shores. Several Korean actors are making their big leaps in Hollywood, but as most of those know, success doesn’t always come at the drop of a hat. Take K-drama icon Song Joong Ki for example, who recently recalled stories of his share of rejections for international projects.

On October 15, the Vincenzo actor appeared as a guest on Newsroom, an interview segment which aired at the South Korean network JTBC. The actor, who’s currently promoting his new film Hopeless, delved into his criteria when choosing projects.
“Personally, I try not to do what I’ve done before. I have this strange obsession,” he said in a translation by Koreaboo. “If I don’t enjoy it myself, it shows. I’m not trying to be humble. If I can’t enjoy it because I don’t have the abilities to do it, then my full potential doesn’t come out.”
To tap into different parts of his creativity as an actor, Joong Ki hopes to take on a variety of roles that are unlike his past work. This includes joining auditions for international projects, which, according to him, hasn’t always panned out well.
“After finishing the schedules for Hopeless’ release, I will go overseas to attend several auditions,” the actor shared. “I hope I make it this time. So far, I’ve always failed. My desire to act in different cultural contexts and industries is growing every day.”
Despite the setbacks, Joong Ki still remains determined to break into roles he has yet to delve into. “I want to broaden my horizons. Thankfully, I’ve climbed up the mountain, but I want to become an even broader mountain,” he said. “That’s why I’m taking on various challenges. If you continue to support me, I will try my best to become an actor who you can look forward to.”
We hear you, Joong Ki! Best of luck!
