The "Kings of P-pop" admit that their looks have always been subject to criticism from naysayers.

Since debuting in 2018, SB19 has steadily earned the title of the "Kings of P-pop." However, their ascent to the top didn't come without a few obstacles along the way. In a recent interview with Boy Abunda, the boys opened up about the less-than-desirable side of their journey, as they even recalled moments when they were bashed for their looks.

SB19 Recalls Being Called "Ugly" During the Early Days of Their Career

The band started out slow before eventually making a name for themselves in the music industry. Part of the process were the incessant mean comments they would get from bystanders, who nitpicked everything from their songs to their appearances.

Ken, the group's main dancer and lead rapper, says that they would frequently be told "You're ugly. You guys are ugly," during the early days of their career.

Josh emphasizes that, "Minsan nagiging personal na nga eh. Umaabot sa point na pwede mo na silang mademanda." According to him, the group is more than willing to hear constructive criticism, as long as it doesn't come from a place of malice. "I don’t think it’s good na pati sa social media or even in other [platforms], ipapalaganap pa nila 'yung mga ganon," he states.

Main vocalist Stell adds that most of the time, they're unaware of where the hate is coming from. "Naririnig ko po sa ibang tao na sobrang forced daw talaga ng hate," he says. At the end of the day, Stell says that such bashing is like water off a duck's back at this point in their career.

He continues, "'Yung mga ganong klaseng bashing, ‘di ko na pinapansin. Hinahayaan ko na lang kung doon sila masaya." SB19's goal, according to Stell, is to make people happy, so they're glad to at least give their critics that joy.

"Kung sumaya sila roon, at least kami yung dahilan bakit sila sumaya. 'Yun naman 'yung goal eh, magpalaganap ng saya," he says.
