Tourists will mostly walk on foot, rarely by car, to get to where they want to be in La Union. It's what makes local culture so vibrant in this province. Given that you'll be spending the majority of your time under the sun, it's worth considering the practicality of staying in hostels. Why need anything else bigger than a bunk bed, especially when the beach is right there?
Right smack in the prime spot of San Juan, La Union is Rada Hostel, a shipping container hotel with budget-friendly rates starting at P750 per person/night—with complimentary breakfast to boot!
You'll find the internet-famous 7-Eleven branch in front of it, which is only a two-minute walk to the beach. It’s also beside La Union favorites Tagpuan and Funky Quarters.
Parking is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving via bus? Travelers journeying from Manila will also be glad to know that the majority of the commute options to San Juan make stops in front of Rada Hostel. Plenty of tricycles also line up on this side of the street if the sun is too hot out to walk in.

Dorm rooms are good for one to four people as each air-conditioned room has four spacious beds, each with a charging socket and a curtain for privacy. Solo travelers can opt for this choice, but will have to shoulder the cost of two people.
Have more budget to spare? Rada Hostel might be known for its bunk offerings, but it also has a few private rooms for those who like a bigger space (and a private bathroom!).
Weekday rates (Monday to Thursday)
- Dorm room – P1,700 for two people per night, with an additional P700 per head (no sharing)
- Private room – P2,700 for two people per night
Weekend rates (Friday to Sunday)
- Dorm room – P2,700 for two people per night, with an additional P850 per head (no sharing)
- Private room – P4,200 for two people per night
Every floor has a water station and communal space where everyone can hang out to play cards or work remotely. Sunlight permeates through the glass windows all day.
The bathrooms are communal for bunkers as well, but at least it has heaters and bidets to make up for that fact. “Rada Hostel was built on the very concepts of simple, fun, and chill. Every wall, every corner designed to invoke the laid-back vibe of La Union," it said on Facebook.
A few bicycles and penny boards are also available for use. It’s free, as long as you return it in the same condition you got it. Bringing pets? Cats and dogs will be welcomed here with open arms at no extra charge.
The overnight stay comes with a Filipino breakfast at Silong, which is an extension of Rada Hostel by the entrance. Ready to party at night? Head over to Rada Hostel’s rooftop to find Shogun, a neon-lit Japanese bar that is open until 1 a.m. on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday; and until 3 a.m. on Saturday.
Rada Hostel is at Urbiztondo Road corner MacArthur Highway, San Juan, La Union. Rates start at P750. For more information, visit Rada Hostel LU on Facebook.
