Temperature-wise, Butuan City in Agusan del Norte and Legazpi City in Albay are two places you wouldn’t want to be in right now. The heat index for both is reaching close to 50°C in the past week.
We're not that safe in the Metro, either. This sweltering heat is only going to get worse in May, where the heat index is likely to reach 40°C in Metro Manila as per Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Mountain retreats like Baguio City have become a respite for people during the summer season, but there are other less-crowded places to visit for a chance to cool off.
Local places with the lowest heat index
Take note the information is based on the latest available data on April 27.
- Baguio City, Benguet – 26°C
- Basco, Batanes – 28°C
- Tanay, Rizal – 30°C
- Itbayat, Batanes – 30°C
- Calayan, Cagayan – 32°C
Except Baguio City, all of them fall under the Yellow warning, which is the second lowest classification in PAGASA's five-tier heat index scale as seen below:
- Caution (Yellow) – 27°C to 32°C
- Extreme Caution (Orange) – 33°C to 41°C
- Danger (Red) – 42°C to 51°C
- Extreme Danger (Dark Red) – 52°C and beyond
Although cooler than the rest of the country, PAGASA said it is still possible for people in the Yellow warning to experience fatigue or even heat cramps from prolonged exposure to activity.
Runner-ups for the coolest places are Abucay, Bataan; Baler, Aurora; Casiguran, Aurora; and General Santos City, South Cotabato, all of which have a heat index of 35°C.
In comparison, Pasay City in Metro Manila was at 41°C on that same day. Being in this Red classification puts people at risk for heat strokes. Don't forget to cool off!
