In the middle of the forest in Masungi Georeserve, crowns of vivid pink disturb the expansive green canopy. Philippine cherry blossoms or salinggogon (Cratoxylum formosum) are starting to bloom, signaling the arrival of the dry season in the Philippines.

Native to the Philippines, the Salinggogon tree can grow up to 65 feet tall, with some known specimens reaching over 140 feet. The species is also found in mainland Southeast Asia. The IUCN Red List classifies the species under “Least Concern,” thanks to its widespread distribution in Southeast Asia. Because of its hue when in bloom, it is often compared to Japan’s famous cherry blossoms.

“Under the protection of Masungi park rangers, these trees are flourishing without the threat of being cleared. While Salinggogon trees abound in the georeserve, more of this flora species have already been planted in the Masungi Geopark Project, our reforestation initiative in denuded watershed areas,” writes Masungi Georeserve.

“However, they are all young and we will need patience to see a forest of pink blooms in the future. Under our park rangers' care, these magnificent trees will someday be in full bloom at almost the same time as its famous Japanese look-alike, the Sakura,” it added.
