San Juan, La Union, known for its long shoreline, barrelling waves, and beautiful sunsets, was once a quiet surf town up north but has since grown into a bustling party and thriving food scene. Thanks to various road improvements and expressway constructions, this once-hidden surf spot has become the weekend getaway for many a Metro Manila yuppie looking for some sun and waves (and the occasional beach party).
The beach area of Urbiztondo in San Juan, La Union, is home to a lot of food parks and stalls ready to accommodate the hungry post-surf or post-swim crowd, but it looks like it's getting a new addition to its list of must-eats as Poblacion-favorite Onlypans is opening up shop in the area soon, based on a couple of very exciting Instagram shots.
Onlypans teases the opening of a La Union outpost
While no official menu and final opening date have been released as of writing, we're keeping our fingers crossed that they bring their signature taqueria menu to the North. If the photos posted on their Instagram are any sign, it looks like La Union might be getting their taste of Onlypans pretty soon.
While no final address is confirmed, several comments on the Onlypans Instagram account point to a spot right beside Clean Beach, an area near Flotsam and Jetsam, which is a great spot for drinks and beach parties. "La Union Turf almost done," they wrote as caption on one of their posts.
In case you haven't heard of them, Onlypans is a taqueria in Poblacion, Makati, famous for their Quesa Birria Tacos. Think USDA beef stewed in a unique mix of 16 spices and Mexican chilies slathered all over toasted soft-shell tacos complete with mozzarella and a small tub of consommé. For beverages, Onlypans carries the elusive Mexican Coca-Cola, which is sweetened with sugarcane and not the regular corn syrup giving the drink a slightly less saccharine and lighter taste. They also serve Horchata from the neighboring Good Sh*t Coffee spot. Horchata is a famous Latin American rice-based drink that they alter with almond milk and herbs to make it creamier and more refreshing.
These tacos are the perfect way to wash out the alcohol after partying all night in Poblacion, but wolfing a couple down after a long day at the beach, or another long night of partying, only this time at the beach, also sounds ideal.
Onlypans started as a takeout service in September 2021 and, eventually, opened a physical store in Poblacion by April 2022. They serve around 100 kilos of beef daily and with this new outpost in Urbiztondo, that number is sure to get higher.
Onlypans Poblacion is at 5663 Don Pedro, Poblacion, Makati. For more information, follow Onlypans Poblacion's Instagram account.
