What Is New Zealand’s Manaaki Scholarship?
The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships, funded by the New Zealand Government through the International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme, aim to support future leaders from developing countries, including the Philippines. According to the New Zealand Embassy in Manila, this program has been running since the 1950s, empowering young professionals to make a difference in key sectors such as climate change, renewable energy, disaster risk management, and good governance.
For the 2024 cycle, 16 Filipino scholars were selected to study in New Zealand, tackling subjects like agriculture, peace, and gender studies.

Who Are Eligible to Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a Filipino citizen residing in the Philippines for at least two years prior to applying.
- Be at least 18 years old at the start of the scholarship (with preference for applicants under 40).
- Apply for a postgraduate program (Master’s or PhD) in an eligible field of study.
- Have at least one year of full-time work experience or two years of part-time experience relevant to your field.
- Commit to contributing to the Philippines’ social and economic development for at least two years after completing your studies.
- Meet the academic and English language requirements of your chosen New Zealand institution.
For PhD applicants, securing a supervisor early is highly encouraged.
Priority Fields of Study: The program prioritizes scholars from the Visayas, Mindanao, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and focuses on courses related to:
- Climate Change & Resilience: Environmental policy, natural resource management, disaster management, and more.
- Economic Resilience & Private Sector: Renewable energy, energy management, geothermal and solar energy, etc.
- Good Governance: Public policy, peace and conflict studies, development studies, and indigenous studies.
What Does New Zealand’s Manaaki Scholarship Cover?
If selected, scholars receive full financial support, including:
- Full tuition fees
- Living allowance (to cover daily expenses)
- Establishment allowance (to help with initial costs)
- Medical and travel insurance
- Round-trip airfare between the Philippines and New Zealand
