November is here and while most citizens of the Metro recognize this month as the (official) beginning of the Mariah Carey holiday season, movie buffs will know that this is when the awards contenders start popping up in cinemas!
Between this year's Palme d'Or winner Triangle of Sadness and She Said, a biopic centered on the New York Times journalists that exposed sexual abuse within Hollywood, we've got at least a couple compelling titles in the mix. However, this month will also feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 30th feature film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the Timothée Chalamet coming-of-age cannibal romance movie Bones and All. It's safe to say that this'll be a pretty wild month for movies at the cinema!
Here are the new movies now showing in cinemas this November:
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Release date: Wednesday, November 9
Kicking off the month in their typically explosive fashion, Marvel Studios is dropping the sequel to their 2018 billion-dollar hit Black Panther. The sequel will explore what it means for Wakanda to now be open to the rest of the world, as the nation also navigates the loss of their king and protector, T'Challa. Joining the fight are Tenoch Huerta as Marvel's first mutant Namor the Submariner and the MCU's next Iron Man, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams (a.k.a. Ironheart).
Strange World
Release date: Wednesday, November 23
Another film coming from the House of Mouse this November is their animated adventure flick Strange World, from the director of Big Hero 6 and Raya and the Last Dragon. The film follows the Jake Gyllenhaal-voiced farmer Searcher Clade as he follows in his family's footsteps and journeys into the mysterious land of Avalonia. It's Disney's spin at pulp sci-fi aesthetics of the 20th century. Disney+ may be dropping in the Philippines a week earlier, but we aren't going to miss out on a theatrical adventure film.
Bones and All
Release date: Wednesday, November 23
Timothée Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino's follow-up to Call Me By Your Name is a coming-of-age cannibal road trip movie with a cast stacked with tremendously talented character actors, such as Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, and Chloë Sevigny (and even the director of the most recent Halloween trilogy David Gordon Green). We can't wait to see Guadagnino channel both Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria in one film.
She Said
Release date: Wednesday, November 23
Speaking of disturbing monsters out for blood, notorious Hollywood personality Harvey Weinstein is the central topic of November's awards season biopic. Promising Young Woman's Carey Mulligan and Clickbait's Zoe Kazan star as the New York Times journalists who broke the comprehensive story that exposed Weinstein's not-all-that-secret history of sexual misconduct as the big man of the Hollywood studio system. You're likely to get a riveting journalistic drama a la The Post and Spotlight, but you're almost guaranteed to get a fantastic score out of the film, as the music will be composed by Succession's Nicholas Britell.
Triangle of Sadness
Release date: Wednesday, November 30
If you're going to go out of your cinematic comfort zone this month, you would best accomplish this with Triangle of Sadness. The satirical dark comedy follows a fashion celebrity couple who embark on a cruise filled with the rich and powerful. The film won the coveted Palme d'Or, the top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but Filipino fans should particularly be excited to catch History ni Ha star Dolly de Leon playing a major role in this film's ensemble.
The film premieres in cinemas on November 30th, but you can catch it even earlier as part of QCinema's festival lineup, on November 21 in Power Plant Mall.
Violent Night
Release date: Wednesday, November 30
Closing out the month, Violent Night fittingly leads into the month of December. The dark comedy action flick follows Santa Clause (portrayed by Stranger Things and Black Widow's David Harbour) as he protects a home from being invaded by a group of mercenaries. We rarely get these little mid-budget action films anymore, so we'll consider this as our gift for being nice this year... mostly. All we'll say is: you better watch out!
