Sandwiched in between the months of the summer blockbuster and the rollout of awards season, September is usually the month where moviegoers and film enthusiasts alike are treated to the zaniest cinematic treats too niche to fall into either category.
This year's September releases sees the return of One Piece, new versions of global hits Avatar and Spider-Man: No Way Home, on top of the outings from visionary filmmaker George Miller and producer Reese Witherspoon.
Here are the movies now showing in cinemas this September:
Spider-Man: No Way Home - The More Fun Stuff Version
Release date: Wednesday, September 7
Yup, you're reading it correctly. Spider-Man: No Way Home is back in cinemas with its extended edition entitled The More Fun Stuff Version. The new theatrical version will reportedly include 11 minutes of additional footage, as well as what looks to be more refined CGI in some scenes that we've already seen.
From the trailer, it looks like we'll be getting more scenes of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) managing high school life earlier on, after his identity was revealed to the world, and more scenes of Peter stopping petty crimes as Spider-Man. Fingers and webs crossed that we get more scenes of Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, though!
Where The Crawdads Sing
Release date: Wednesday, September 14
Based on the book of the same name, Where the Crawdads Sing is a murder mystery/coming-of-age drama set in the marshlands of North Carolina. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as the young, orphaned woman who becomes the prime suspect in a nearby town's murder case. You can already see the haunting but beautiful tone the movie will be going for with this plot, but to top it off, Big Little Lies' Reese Witherspoon is producing the film, while Taylor Swift has got an original song dropping in the movie—just in case you're not all too familiar with hearing her music in surround sound.
Three Thousand Years of Longing
Release date: Wednesday, September 14
A bizarre fact that continues to baffle us to this day is that Australian director George Miller is the mind behind both the Mad Max universe and the Happy Feet universe—and both are terrific film series! Simply put, how does he do it? Similarly weird is his next film entitled Three Thousand Years of Longing, his first feature since the glorious action spectacle Fury Road in 2015.
The film stars Tilda Swinton as a scholar who travels to Istanbul and meets a Djinn (what Westerners would refer to as a "genie"), portrayed by Idris Elba. Elba's got pointy ears, Swinton's got three wishes, and that's all we need to know before checking out the insane new Miller project.
Avatar - Remastered
Release date: Late September
While audiences will have to wait a couple more months before the glorious, long-awaited return to Pandora with Avatar: The Way of Water dropping in December, we'll be allowed to feast on an appetizer this month with the release of the 4K HDR remastered version of the 2009 record-breaking blockbuster. With an IMAX rollout and noticeable improvements done on the film's CGI, we don't think there's a better film to escape into for three hours this month.
Don't Worry Darling
Release date: Wednesday, September 28
Starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, as well as being directed by Olivia Wilde, Don't Worry Darling definitely looks to be a scandalous film for a myriad of reasons. First, we have the film's plot, which follows Pugh and Styles as a 1950s gold standard of a happy newlywed couple. They take up residence in a town owned and created by the company of Styles' character, only to discover that some strange, Get Out/Suspiria/Eyes Wide Shut-like shenanigans are going on. The film may be a psychological thriller, but the trailers also highlight the many erotic scenes between Pugh and Styles.
One Piece Film: Red
Release date: Wednesday, September 28
The One Piece is real! In that, the latest One Piece Film: Red is dropping in cinemas for Filipino audiences. The new anime revolves around Shanks, one of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the most powerful characters in the series, and his daughter Uta, the world's greatest diva. Long-time fans of the series will be delighted to know that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda was reportedly heavily involved in this film's production, moreso than in previous outings, while curious audiences won't have to worry, as One Piece films never truly require in-depth canon research.
Smile
Release date: Wednesday, September 28
Finally, don't think we'd end one of these lists without catching what horror film is coming out within the month. Smile is capping off September with a scream—and a smile, of course. The new horror outing plays with the creepiest image known to man, a forced smile! As our main characters uncover the mystery behind the murders, they soon discover that everyone who sees the cursed smile dies not long after.
