The film industry is often abuzz with excitement and anticipation whenever a highly anticipated project comes into the spotlight, and one film generating tremendous hype lately is the Barbie movie, directed by the renowned Greta Gerwig with Margot Robbie in the lead role.

However, not everyone seems to be as ecstatic about the movie. Case in point: The hype surrounding this iconic character's cinematic adaptation has been met with a negative review from MJ Lastimosa, who labeled it as a "waste of money."

Her feedback about the movie received mixed reactions from netizens, with some expressing their disagreement and claiming that she "did not understand” the film's underlying theme.

“When MJ Lastimosa said na waley yung Barbie, parang it’s a reflection of how shallow her understanding lang eh, she only saw the comedy part of it (which to be fair may not be for everybody) but not the underlying theme of the movie lmao,” one comment reads.

Responding to the online backlash, the beauty queen addressed the issue and expressed concern about the extent of online bullying that she faced merely because she had a differing opinion. She posted an entire thread on Twitter in reaction to her bashers.

“Wait lang naman sobrang online bullying naman agad kayo. Nakakatakot naman magka opinion dito, minumura na ako ng iba sa ibang [social media] ko only because I did not like a film?” she said.

“I liked 'Little Women' and 'Lady Bird' naman, why attack me if I say I didn’t find it as good? It’s just my opinion and it has nothing to do about the movie being feminist, which is the only part that I liked, [especially] the speech of America Ferreiraparang dapat nga wala na si Will Ferrell dun. But it’s just me, you’re entitled to like and dislike a movie. It’s not that deep mare."

"Wala akong inapakang tao," she reiterates. "Natatakot din akong itweet to kasi magagalit nanaman kayo kasi dapat in unison ang opinion naten dito or else bobo na agad kami? sorry na agad mga mare kalma na [masyado] na kayong galit."

In her defense, some netizens pointed out that she has the right to her own opinion just like everyone else.

One user responded to MJ's tweet, advising the beauty queen to ignore the haters. "Dedma na, mars. It was your opinion about the film and that was your P600. We all have that moment naman na napo-post agad ang bugso ng damdamin, and knowing Twitter folks, everything could blow up in an instant, especially if an opinion come from women of power like you," it reads.

Barbie premiered globally in theaters last July 19, 2023. It has since taken over the number one spot in 55 markets, including the Philippines. As of writing, the film has raked in $337 million worldwide, with $155 million in the U.S. opening alone.
