Despite her hopeful attempts to adjust her working schedule, Maris Racal officially stated that she won’t be in attendance for the world premiere of Sunshine. The film, directed by Antoinette Jadaone, is set to premiere at TIFF 2024, which is held annually in the Canadian city.
In a report by ABS-CBN News, the actress explained that she will be filming her upcoming series Incognito in Italy, which coincided with Sunshine’s TIFF premiere. “I made a commitment kasi and this [Incognito shoot in Italy] is booked na way early this year,” she said in the interview before flying out of the country.

According to the actress, changes would have been doable if Incognito’s shoot was held locally, but adjusting an international film production would disrupt prior schedules and bookings.
“I appreciate naman the production and ABS-CBN, they really tried to move things around for me ’cause they know how important TIFF is for me. They really tried. They really tried to change the schedule but matagal na talagang naka-book 'yung Italy.”
Previously, the actress explained on X that she would not be able to attend Sunshine’s premiere at TIFF due to her scheduling conflicts.

Maris’ fans rallied behind her in hopes of her TIFF debut, which she subsequently updated on. “Nilalalaban po,” she wrote in one X post, regarding a potential schedule adjustment. “Pls send good energy!!”
In the interview with ABS-CBN, the actress said that she had even received her Canadian visa, but her original schedule in Italy had to push through. “My visa got approved kaninang umaga (September 10). Heartbreaking.”
Maris admitted that she had shed tears for the missed opportunity, but she had already moved on. “It’s not about me naman eh, the important thing is there is a Filipino movie na kasama sa TIFF 2024. Direk Tonet (Jadaone) will be there. I’ll be there in spirit. Beaming with pride, I’m in Italy to support them.”
What Is “Sunshine” About?
After the trailer of Sunshine was released online, Internet users lauded the glimpses of her performance as the titular character. The Antoinette Jadaone film spotlights Sunshine, a talented gymnast and aspiring Olympian, whose career is put in jeopardy after she discovers her accidental pregnancy.
Based on its official TIFF summary, Sunshine sheds light on morality, healthcare, and reproductive rights in a religious country like the Philippines, as the troubled athlete seeks abortifacients in the “dark corners of a market,” where she also runs into a mysterious young girl.

“Hindi ko in-expect na ganun 'yung pagka-accept ng trailer. A tear fell. Sobrang natuwa ako, kasi ang daming lumabas na tao na they were rooting for you since day one. Thankful din ako for Direk Tonet for trusting me with this huge responsibility. Hindi biro 'yung role na 'yun,” Maris said to ABS-CBN.
Sunshine will premiere at TIFF on September 13 Manila time as part of the 2024 Centrepiece program, which features 43 titles from 41 countries. Screenings are now sold out in Toronto, but the film is also expected to be shown in Philippines cinemas soon.
