Her-story has just been made! At the 2023 Asian Academy Creative Awards ceremony held last December 7 in Singapore, Drag Den host and proud Pinoy queen Manila Luzon took home the Best Entertainment Host award.
Drag Den Host Manila Luzon Wins at the 2023 Asian Academy Creative Awards
Dressed like a trophy herself in a glamorous black ensemble by Filipino designer Ushi Sato, Manila bested representatives from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and India. The RuPaul's Drag Race alumni served as the emcee and head judge of the Prime Video series, taking on the title as the "Drag Lord."
In her acceptance speech, she honored the eight contestants of Drag Den season 1, calling them the "stars of [their] show." Among them was Preview Pride 2023 cover star Barbie-Q, and the inaugural winner of the series NAIA.
Witnessing the victory from the audience was the show's creator and director Rod Singh, as well as cast members Aries Night and Sassa Gurl. On her Instagram account, Rod penned a heartwarming message regarding the recognition.
"As a locally-produced queer show with limited resources, being national winners at the Asian Academy Creative Awards is already a win for us. Drag Den as the only queer show competing for a major award in a sea of million dollar-budget shows is not just a recognition of our talent and hard work, but also a reminder of the importance of support," she wrote. She closed out her caption by congratulating Manila, thanking her for upholding "Pinoy Drag Supremacy" within and beyond her stint as a host.
A big congratulations, Manila, and to the entire team behind Drag Den!
Drag Den season 2 is streaming on Prime Video this January 18, 2024.
