The K-drama Lovely Runner has garnered a cult following on the internet, thanks to its take on the time-travel story, coupled with some swoon-worthy moments. But before achieving its current status, the series’ production had its fair share of setbacks–including a delay that spanned a few years.
What Is “Lovely Runner” About?
In the tvN-produced and Viu-streaming drama based on the web novel by Kim Bbang, Strong Girl Namsoon and Record of Youth’s Byeon Woo Seok plays A-star celebrity Ryu Seon-jae, who, despite his fame, hides a struggling side beyond the glitz and the glamor. On the other side of the story is Kim Hye Yoon’s Im Sol, a loyal fan of Seon-jae’s. Things take a tragic turn when Im Sol discovers Seon-jae’s tragic passing, prompting a twist of fate as she is sent back 15 years into the past, meeting a 19-year-old Seon-jae. Soon, they’ll discover that their stars might be aligned after all.
Why “Lovely Runner’s” Production Was Delayed for Three Years
The production for Lovely Runner wasn’t smooth sailing, however. In a report by the Korean newspaper Hankook Ilbo, it was revealed that the drama took a full three years before production took flight. According to the report, several actors had turned down offers to lead the show because of their initial belief that Lovely Runner merely delved into the story of a K-pop fan’s unrequited love.
Finally, Byeon Woo Seok was signed on to the show. After scheduling conflicts with directors, the series eventually found some success, as even its song “Sonagi” entered the top 100 of South Korea’s Melon charts. It's a commendable feat even for real-life music acts!
