Any theater aficionado would know that the stage is ripe for whimsy and wonder with every production. Nothing could better typify this than the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors, which is making its return to the Philippine theater scene.
Following the production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Sandbox Collective continues its sensational streak for its 10th anniversary season with the local staging of Little Shop of Horrors. The iconic horror comedy rock musical will take a distinct turn this time around, with a star-studded cast roster including Karylle, Nyoy Volante, and Sue Ramirez, who makes her theater debut. Before settling in your seats, get all you need to know about the latest production below.
What Is the “Little Shop of Horrors” About?
Little Shop of Horrors, inspired by Roger Corman’s 1960 film, revolves around Seymour Krelborn, an unlucky floral assistant who discovers a peculiar plant with a thirst for human blood. Named Audrey II, the plant’s rapid growth and increasing fame pull Seymour into a whirlwind of notoriety, romance, and ethical conflicts.
Since its Off-Off-Broadway debut in 1982, this musical has enchanted audiences with its unique mix of comedy, horror, and heartfelt moments. The production features the music of Alan Menken and the poignant lyrics of Howard Ashman in songs like “Suddenly, Seymour” and “Somewhere That’s Green.” The creative duo has long been celebrated for their award-winning contributions to the arts, including multiple Academy Awards and Grammys.

Helming the production is Toff de Venecia, The Sandbox Collective’s managing artistic director. Toff envisions the show as “musical theatre of the absurd,” aiming to create a surrealist world that blends elements of horror, whimsy, and hope, as true to the show’s spirit.
The production's creative team includes puppet artist Kayla Teodoro, known for her work with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s My Neighbour Totoro and the National Theatre of London’s Life of Pi. Scenographer Mio Infante, who recently worked on 9 Works Theatrical’s RENT, sets the stage for the setting of Skid Row.
