Rising Chinese actor Liang Youcheng has passed away at the age of 27. The young star reportedly succumbed to flu complications just two days after Chinese New Year.

The news shocked Asian drama fans who are still mourning the death of Meteor Garden icon Barbie Hsu, who passed last February 2 in Japan from influenza-related pneumonia.

As pert reports from Chinese media, Liang was diagnosed with a common colds after showing mild symptoms. His condition quickly worsened, leading to infections of the central nervous system, which eventually caused his death.

Who was Liang Youcheng?

1. He hailed from Sichuan Province in China

Known as Eugene Liang Youcheng, he was born in the province of Sichuan and made his acting debut in 2018.

2. He acted in supporting roles for period dramas

Liang’s filmography mostly required him to dress in traditional Chinese garb. Thanks to his regal facial features, he was praised by netizens for having the natural looks of a young prince.

3. He was set to appear in a new TV show

Liang was cast in C-dramas like My Heart, Fantasy Forest, and Echo of Her Voice. Before his untimely death, he had been filming a show titled It Girl in Tang Dynasty, scheduled for release later this year.

4. He sent his mother a gift before his passing

According to Malaysian-based news outlet The Star, Liang’s last message to his mother was on the night before Lunar New Year. He sent her an e ang-pow worth 888 yuan or P7,073, which he said was a gift from his production team.

5. His death has raised alarms about the severe consequences of influenza

Liang and Barbie’s deaths have caused concern over the fatal effects of the flu, which is often downplayed and overlooked. Administration of flu shots have spiked greatly in Hong Kong and Taiwan due to recent events, as stated in an article by The South China Morning Post. It was also reported that stock of government-funded flu vaccine in Taipei has dropped to half in less than 24 hours, from 12,000 doses to 6,200.
