Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve already seen the throwback photo of Kris Bernal’s Y2K “emo” hairstyle. The image was a snippet from StarStruck: The Next Level, a reality-based talent search competition where Kris was one of the contestants. In the episode, which aired back in 2007, the actress underwent a rather unexpected makeover that left her in tears.
In the video, she explains, "Ito yung pinakamahabang gupit sakin. Dati one inch lang. Trim lang." It then cuts to Kris with her new ‘do standing teary-eyed but still trying to put on a brave smile. Next to her was guest hairstylist Richard Perello, who explains his reason for choosing the hairstyle. He says, "Sa lahat ng girls kasi, lahat sila long [hair]. Inisip ko sa kanya, bagay naman yung short."
Netizens were so amused by the throwback video that they decided to create memes about the haircut, making the image go viral. Obviously, these memes didn’t go unnoticed by Kris, who herself even reposted some of the memes she was tagged in on her Instagram stories.

In one Instagram story, Kris shared a netizen's photo recreating Kris' throwback haircut. "Yung buntot kasi [melting emoji]," she commented.
Even fellow actress Maris Racal used the clip of Kris as a meme on her Instagram Broadcast channel with the caption, "Yung minsan ka lang mabunot sa raffle tapos sisigawan ng 'ah artista, waive mo na yaan." To which, Kris reacted: "At, ang daming napasaya."
In another Instagram story, a netizen reshared snippets from the episode with the comment "DI NAMAN MASHAKET [smiling tear moji]." Kris then reposted the photo with her own comment, explaining why she couldn't burst out crying as it might cause her elimination from the competition. She wrote, "MASHAKET! PIGIL NA PIGIL ANG IYAK DAHIL BAKA MALIGWAK!"
Local Motor Taxi company Angkas, who is known for using memes in their advertisements, also joined in on the fun. They recreated Kris' photo in one of their most recent posts, captioning, "Yung buhok mo after mo hubarin yung helmet." Kris reposted it with the reply, "Ang layo na ng inabot ng buhok ko."
