If A Very Good Girl marked a different Kathryn Bernardo for the Filipino movie-going audience, then her new project will uncover the actress at her “most daring” yet. In the wake of her recent movie marking her new “era,” fans have reminded the public of an upcoming film that’s set to shake the industry: Elena 1944, where Kathryn will play a comfort woman during the Japanese occupation.

Adapted from the Palanca Award-winning screenplay by Patrick Valencia and produced by Black Sheep Productions, Elena 1944 is an upcoming action-drama film backdropped by the perilous time of the Philippines’ Japanese period. Kathryn is set to portray the protagonist Elena, a comfort woman during the era, which director Olivia Lamasan considers as a “challenging and daring” role.

During the initial reveal in March this year, Kathryn expressed that she had accepted the role due to the director being signed on to the project, as they previously worked together in Barcelona: A Love Untold. But aside from that, playing Elena spoke to her as a woman.

Nire-represent ko 'yung pagkababae ko, and I love to do something like that [which is] representing women empowerment,” she said.

While details on the film are still kept under wraps, director Olivia says that the tale will go “beyond the story of being a comfort woman.” As for Kathryn as an actress, the filmmaker promises that the character is her “most daring role” yet.
