His family revealed that he struggled with his mental health.

The youngest brother of Elijah Canlas, Jamile Matthew Canlas, better known as JM by his family and friends, has passed away.

His family announced this through a Facebook post yesterday, August 3, 2023. In the post, they wrote, “It is with the heaviest heart and deep sorrow that our family announces the death of our bunso, Jamile Matthew Madiclum Canlas, earlier this morning.”

1. He comes from a family of creatives.

Like his older brothers Elijah and Jerom, JM was also an actor. He had several acting credits under his belt, appearing in indie films such as Kiko Boksingero (2017) and ANi (2019). He also starred in the 2020 TV series Unconditional alongside his brother Elijah.


2. He was a voice actor.

JM not only excelled in front of the camera but also demonstrated a talent for voice acting. He lent his voice to local cartoons like Jet and the Pet Rangers, where he took on the lead role of Jet. Additionally, he was part of the team of actors who provided the Filipino dubbing for the popular Netflix series Stranger Things.

3. He started acting at a very young age.

According to his IMDb, his first television appearance was in the TV series Team Yey back in 2016. He would have been only 10 years old at the time. 

4. He was multifaceted.

In the announcement of JM’s passing, his older brother wrote, “Jm, as he was known to many, was a talented actor, athlete, musician, singer, debater, and gamer. He was always a proud Filipino with a bias and compassion for the poor and oppressed. But most of all, JM will forever be remembered as an incredible young man, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, student, and friend.”

5. He was only 17.

JM was born on March 4, 2006, and was the youngest of three siblings. He passed away just five months after turning 17.

Although his family did not disclose the cause of his death, they revealed that he had struggles with his mental health. In their post, they included a list of hotlines and institutions to contact for those struggling with their psychological well-being and need urgent attention:
