You can trust the MET Gala to bring out a celebrity’s inhibitions when it comes to red carpet fashion. Kim Kardashian is no stranger to turning up in statement ‘fits that always gets the internet talking. Remember her corseted Mugler dress dripping in crystals? Or her controversial floral Givenchy frock that flaunted her pregnancy back in 2013? There’s never a dull MET moment with the reality TV star turned cultural icon.
You’d expect that for this year’s theme In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, the 40-year-old celebrity would turn up in cowboy regalia or channel old Hollywood glamour. Instead, she went with something ambiguous: a literal head-to-toe all-black ‘fit. The ensemble covered Kim in black fabric from the top of her head down to her pointy sock boots. She was not at all recognizable—but more importantly, people were confused to how this related to the ball’s dress code?
