Could the original cast members show up as guest stars?

Eight years after the beloved sitcom came to an end, How I Met Your Mother fans might be pleased to know that in the beginning of 2022, a spinoff series of the original is set to premiere on streaming platform Hulu, and leading the cast is none other than Hilary Duff. The show, entitled How I Met Your Father, is bound to capture the hearts of many, as the familiar storyline is told from the unique perspective of Hilary's character, Sophie. The show’s first trailer was just released on December 16, and it briefly gave audiences a peek at what to expect within its 10 episodes. Are you ready to find out more?

The Plot

Set in modern day New York City, the story follows the life of Sophie who, in the complicated age of social media and online dating, goes through the complex journey of finding love in a world where your options seem limitless. In homage to HIMYM's original format, the show will also be told in flashbacks as the older Sophie relays to her son the ups and downs of her life, friendships, and the story of how she met his father.

The Cast

You might know her best as the quirky Lizzie McGuire, however in this series, you’ll get to know Hilary as Sophie, the show’s protagonist and narrator.

Playing opposite her as the male lead is Chris Lowell (Graves, Glow) who embodies the role of Jesse, a close friend of Sophie’s and a cynic when it comes to love. He’s an aspiring musician who earns his dues as an Uber driver.

Other cast members include Francia Raisa, who plays Valentina, an aspiring stylist and Sophie’s roommate. Deadline reports that Valentina’s character is best described as “impulsive and adventurous,” and Sophie heavily relies on her roommate to cheer her up during tough times.

Tom Ainsley will be playing Charlie, Valentina’s love interest whom she meets and falls in love with upon attending London Fashion Week.

Rounding up the main cast is Tien Tran, who plays the role of Ellen. Ellen is Jesse’s adopted sister, who moves to New York City after splitting from her wife and leaving their small farm life behind. There’s also Suraj Sharma portraying the role of Sid, Jesse’s roommate and best friend. Sid also happens to be a new bar owner in the series, and significantly contrasts Jesse’s pessimistic views on love.

Josh Peck, whom you might know best for the iconic Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh, was cast to play Drew, “a handsome vice principal at Jesse’s elementary school” as described by Deadline.

Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) will have a recurring role throughout the 10-episode series. The actress will be portraying future Sophie, and we can’t wait to see how she’ll be sharing her magnetic energy through the screen.

In a virtual interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hilary hints that while the script is different for this installment, the narrative carries out the same, familiar tune that viewers of the original How I Met Your Mother series knew and loved. The actress also teased that she’s excited for all the guest appearances coming up on the show. Here’s hoping that cast members from the original series, such as Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel will make surprise cameos on one (or two) episodes!

The Crew

HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are returning as writers and executive producers on How I Met Your Father. They’ll be working alongside Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who were behind the also popular and heart-tugging series This Is Us. Meanwhile, working double duty, Hilary not only plays the female protagonist but she’s also credited as a producer for this spinoff.
