Hail fell over parts of Benguet last week, creating a snow-like quality that covered the ground as ice pellets thickly accumulated over the area from strong precipitation.
The phenomenon specifically hit Barangay Ekip in the municipality of Bokod and Barangay Bashoy in Kabayan.
A netizen by the name of Jerilyn Guiniawan documented the aftermath, taken from Mount Purgatory in Bokod, Benguet.
“Nagmala-snow ang itsura sa ilang bahagi ng Benguet matapos umulan at maipon ang maliliit na yelo sa lugar!” reads the caption accompanying the images on the Lost Juan Facebook page. According to the post, the photos were taken on April 23, 2020.
As explained by The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), hailstorms are common around the region although they are usually expected between May to July. They’re formed when water vapor in the air freezes, which then fall to the ground like rain when it becomes too heavy.

While the sheets of ice may seem pretty to look at for mere spectators, hailstorms often cause great devastation for farmers.
Benguet experienced the same event around this time two years ago, which led to P2.5 million in damages to crops across 26.5 hectares of farmland in Atok, Benguet. Vegetables ravaged by the hailstorm included potatoes, carrots, and Chinese cabbage.
