A.k.a. "walis tambeaux."

You've probably seen that now-infamous bilao wall art priced at over P14,000 that went viral in mid-May and had Pinoys on the Internet making jokes nonstop. Well, looks like there's another quintessentially Filipino item circulating on social media: An "Asian Straw Broom" (you guessed it, a walis tambo) is being sold online for around P2000.

The walis went viral on Facebook thanks to a post dated May 24 from user Toto Madayag, who seemed to poke fun at the luxurious price tag for what is pretty much the most basic (and most affordable) cleaning tool in every Filipino household.

The "Asian Straw Broom" is being sold by Thailand-based Etsy shop BroomMikwad. Judging by the fact that the seller is from a fellow Southeast Asian country, we can't help but wonder if the store is looking to market to Western customers who wouldn't know the real cost of a basic walis—but hey, we're just speculating here. According to BroomMikwad's Etsy page, the broom is now "low in stock"—must be a bestseller.

A top comment from the broom's page, posted from the U.S. in January 2019, had nothing but praises for the walis tambo. "The color [of the broom] is bright and clean and looks nice hanging in my kitchen. I use it to sweep my hardwood floor and it works so well!" Well, they're not wrong.

As of writing, Madayag's Facebook post has over 1,600 likes, 2,600 shares, and 300 comments. Check out some of the gems from the post's comments section:

BroomMikwad's Asian Straw Broom (yes, the walis tambo) is available on Etsy... and probably from your local street vendor, too.
