Unless you’re living under a rock, then you've probably heard of the news that Senator Jinggoy Estrada thought of proposing the ban of K-Dramas in the Philippines, citing the lack of support for our own local shows as the underlying reason for it. His statement drew flak from Hallyu-obsessed Filipinos, given our countrymen’s penchant for all things Korean and entertainment.
Among those who expressed their strong thoughts on the matter are our local celebrities, who couldn’t resist airing opposition to the idea. Below, check out their reactions.
Pinoy celebs reacting to possible K-Drama ban:
1. Chito Miranda
For the Parokya ni Edgar frontman, targeting foreign shows such as K-Dramas is not the best bet to empower our local creative industry, but “coming up with better shows and songs is.” He also cited the immense support given to artists such as Eraserheads and Moira Dela Torre, making a case that Filipinos are actually keen on giving their love as long as good quality is there.
2. Pokwang
Comedienne Pokwang took the opportunity to thank the senator for thinking about the artists’ welfare but stressed that instead of banning K-Dramas, perhaps a better route will be providing government support to the entertainment industry.
3. Bela Padilla
Multi-hyphenate Bela echoed Pokwang’s sentiments, mentioning that Filipinos watch K-Dramas for their superb quality and production value, something that filmmakers in our country don’t get the same level of help for to “level the playing field.”
4. Ping Lacson
Former Senator Ping Lacson has this to say: the possible K-Drama ban is an act of "envy."
5. Rowena Guanzon
The lawyer thinks that banning K-Dramas will certainly strike a chord with fans, especially for an Extraordinary Attorney Woo follower like her!
