A month after Astro’s Moonbin took his own life, another South Korean singer was discovered dead in her dormitory on May 12. The person was confirmed to be trot singer Haesoo (real name Kim Ara). Police believe she died due to suicide after finding a note in her room.

1. Haesoo is an up-and-coming trot singer in South Korea.
ICYDK, trot music is one of the most popular music genres in Korea. Some consider it the oldest form of K-pop music (dating back to Japanese colonial rule), while others see it more as a sub-genre of K-pop. Although trot music is often associated with the older generations, the genre has continued to evolve and even thrive in the Korean music industry and Haesoo just happens to be one of the most popular faces of the genre.
2. Haesoo majored in Pansori at the Korea National University of Arts.
Before discovering her passion for trot music, Haesoo majored in Pansori at the Korea National University of Arts’ School of Traditional Arts. Pansori is the old Korean tradition of musical storytelling that is thought to have originated during the Joseon Dynasty in the late 17th century. It is performed by a singer or a group of singers and a drummer.
3. Haesoo only made her debut four years ago.
Haesoo first debuted her trot career in 2019 with the release of her first mini-album titled My Life, Me. Although the late singer only released a few songs throughout her career, she was still able to gain popularity and even developed her own fanbase called the Haesoopia.
4. Haesoo appeared on several South Korean shows
Before her untimely death, Haesoo appeared on several South Korean TV shows and events such as The Trot Show, AM Plaza, Gayo Stage, Boss in the Mirror, and Immortal Songs. Performing on these shows is what really helped launch her career.

5. Haesoo was 29 years old.
Born in December 1993, Haesoo was 29 years old when she passed away.
