With the release of Netflix's newest installment of the Squid Game series comes new characters to get acquainted with. One name in particular that has everyone intrigued is Park Sung Hoon, the actor that plays trans contestant Hyun-ju (Player 120). 1. He was born February 18, 1985.
The 39 year old actor was born in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province in South Korea and is also an Aquarius.
2. He graduated from the Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts.
The actor majored in acting and film, foreshadowing his future career in show business.
3. He made his acting debut in 2006.
He made his first television appearance in 2006 was a minor role on a high school drama called Ssunday Seoul.
4. He has a chihuahua named Box.
Appearing alongside Sung-Hoong in his Dazed Korea and Cosmopolitan Korea spreads, Box is Sung-Hoon's steadfast canine companion.
5. His character on Queen of Tears faced a lot of backlash after the series aired.
Playing the antagonist Yoon Eun Sung in Queen of Tears, the actor experienced a lot of criticism from the show's fans, receiving a lot of hate messages on social media and in real life. During a You Quiz on the Block interview, the actor shared his experience with a woman approaching him and beating his back while urging him to spare the main characters of the show.
6. Him being cast as a trans woman on Squid Game 2 started a lot of controversy.
"There are close to no actors that are openly trans, let alone openly gay," Squid Game 2 director Hwang Dong Hyuk said. "Because unfortunately in the Korean society currently the LGBTQ community is rather still marginalized and more neglected, which is heartbreaking," he added.
