The heavy weight of South Korea’s beauty standards remain to be a common theme in K-dramas, but the Netflix original Mask Girl amplifies it to an even darker degree.
Centered around Kim Mo Mi, the protagonist of the drama is best recognized as a woman whose appearance is shielded by a mask. But behind the scenes, the role is passed on through different faces, too. Below, see all the actresses who went behind the mask as the titular star.
Warning: The article below contains spoilers.
1. Lee Han Byeol
The story starts off with first-time actress Lee Han Byeol as Kim Mo Mi, an office worker whose dreams of finding stardom are weighed down by societal beauty standards. At night, she sheds her identity and dons a mask, performing on live streams under the guise of “Mask Girl.”
2. Nana
Trouble brews when one of Kim Mo Mi’s fans, Handsome Monk, forces himself on her. In an attempt to defend herself, the man gets concussed, leading Mo Mi to believe that she had killed him. Mi Mo goes under the knife and lives her life anew, as played by the South Korean singer and actress Nana. She moves to a different city, where she performs at nightclubs under the name of A-reum.
3. Go Hyun Jung
Eventually, Mo Mi is caught by the police with the belief that she is now a serial killer after stabbing her colleague to death. She gets arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, and is later portrayed by Go Hyun Jung.
4. Zizian
In the earlier days when she had donned a mask, the drama actually had a different actress behind the disguise. The Korean model Zizian performed as a body double for Mo Mi. According to her Instagram post, her filming process involved tons of choreography and dance sessions for the role.
Mask Girl is streaming on Netflix.
