“Definitely, the time I spent in the Philippines helped me become a better player,” the athlete once said.

But prior to his present standing, Gwan Hee played under the Seoul Samsung Thunders, a time when he also found himself playing ball for the PBA. In the 2016 PBA Governer’s Cup, the athlete was signed under the Phoenix Fuel Masters, in the wake of the league seeking more Asian imports to “add more spice to the competition,” according to reports.

While the Phoenix Fuel Masters had eventually lost to the TNT KaTropa, Gwan Hee had a personally impressive run with 24 points on 9-10 shooting. The athlete even credited his stint in the Philippine league for his growing confidence in the sport.

A following game for Asia League’s The Terrific 12 in Macau showcased that confidence, when he gained 17 points on 58 percent shooting from the floor, which eventually became a success story for the Seoul Samsung Thunders' road to the semifinals. During a press conference, he later joked: “Maybe Korea isn’t the place where I need to play. Definitely, the time I spent in the Philippines helped me become a better player.”
