No doubt about it—she’s one of South Korea’s most bankable stars!

Hard work pays off—just ask IU. The Korean singer-songwriter and actress reportedly raked in an estimated 30 billion Korean won (approximately P1.1 billion) in 2024, proving once again that she’s one of the most bankable stars in the South Korean entertainment industry.

According to a report by Korean outlet Sports KH, IU’s agency, Edam Entertainment, disclosed in an audit report that its total payout to artists and related expenses reached 33.6 billion won last year. This figure includes various costs such as promotional, legal, and event agency fees, but industry insiders believe that the vast majority—around 30 billion won—went directly to IU as settlement earnings. The way entertainment agencies classify these payments can vary, but in most cases, artist settlements make up the bulk of total commissions.

What makes IU’s earnings even more impressive is her role beyond just being Edam Entertainment’s top artist. She is also a major shareholder in the agency, owning a 22.5% stake. With Kakao Entertainment holding the largest share at 52.5%, IU’s influence in the company is significant. In fact, Edam Entertainment operates largely as a one-artist agency, with IU’s projects driving the majority of its revenue. In 2024, the company reported 74.9 billion won in sales and 6.1 billion won in operating profit, further cementing IU’s dominance both as an artist and a business powerhouse.

Of course, IU didn’t earn that staggering amount by sitting still. The multi-talented artist has been keeping busy with multiple high-profile projects, including her latest K-drama, When Life Gives You Tangerines. The historical romance, which co-stars Park Bo Gum, has been a major hit, topping Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English series since its release on March 7. Set in 1950s Jeju, the show follows the story of Ae-Sun (IU), a rebellious young woman with dreams of becoming a poet, and Gwan-Sik (Park Bo Gum), a reserved but devoted man who only has eyes for her.

Looking ahead, IU is set to headline another much-anticipated drama in 2025, 21st Century Prince’s Wife, alongside Byeon Woo Seok. The series takes a fresh spin on South Korea’s political landscape, imagining a modern-day constitutional monarchy.

Between chart-topping music, hit dramas, and smart business moves, IU’s dominance in the entertainment industry shows no signs of slowing down. And with numbers like these, it’s safe to say that her star power is only growing stronger.
