The internet’s ability to catapult someone to viral fame can be both a blessing and a curse—something Aly Alindayu, the so-called “Englishera” girl, learned firsthand. A fleeting moment on a dating show turned her into an internet spectacle, and after enduring an onslaught of online criticism, she’s now reclaiming her narrative—not just to set the record straight but to champion a cause bigger than herself: digital accountability and the fight against cyberbullying.

How Did Aly Alindayu Become the Viral "Englishera" Girl?

Aly first appeared on the YouTube dating show Pusuan or Laruan with Marion Aunor, where contestants would either hold balloons to indicate romantic attraction or pop them to express disinterest. During her episode, she met Ian, a school instructor, and ultimately chose to pop her balloon. In a now-viral moment captured on camera, she infamously explained, “I’m an Englishera… halata. Baka ma-overwhelm ka sa’kin, at baka ma-overwhelm din ako sa’yo ‘pag straight Tagalog.”

While the full episode showed the lighthearted and unscripted nature of the interaction, a shortened version of the clip made rounds on social media, leading netizens to perceive Aly’s comment as dismissive. Soon, memes, debates, and widespread criticism flooded the internet, with many taking issue with what they interpreted as a form of language bias. The backlash escalated beyond simple discourse, turning into targeted harassment against Aly.

"Englishera" Girl Responds to Backlash

After weeks of online scrutiny, Aly finally spoke up on March 12, 2025, through an Instagram post where she opened up about the overwhelming impact of the experience. “The hate wasn’t even from a few hundred—it was from tens of thousands of people. People I don’t even know made assumptions and defined my entire character,” she wrote.

“I didn’t do anything wrong, and yet I got hate DMs, was made into memes, a sound bite, death threats, and more,” she shared, adding that the backlash made her fearful of being recognized in public.

Despite the negativity, she also acknowledged the support she received from friends, strangers, and even celebrities who defended her. “There are even creators and celebrities I personally like and strangers who defended me as well. Thank you so much!”

Rather than dwelling on the backlash, Aly is choosing to turn her experience into something meaningful. “After this, I want to be an advocate for bullying. If you guys know where I can start, I am all ears. Maybe a podcast! I want to help other people because I do not wish this at all,” she stated, signaling her intention to use her platform for positive change.

She also addressed those who sent her hate, choosing to take the high road. “To those who have sent me hate, I hear you. We have our own preferences, and I forgive you and wish you peace.”
