When news first broke of a Crash Landing on You American remake, the internet was confused, to say the least. With the plot of the hit 2019 K-drama relying on the conflict between North and South Korea, adapting it for another setting is almost unthinkable. But it seems Netflix’s producers might have a solution in mind, thanks to science fiction.

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Netflix’s global head of television Bela Bajaria and original series vice president Jinny Howe discussed the Hallyu wave that rocked the streaming service in recent years, headlined by hits Squid Game and Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
But while these shows attracted a massive global viewership during their run, Crash Landing on You’s success zeroed in on Asia, which led producers to conceptualize an American adaptation for an international audience. Bela then questioned how they may possibly approach the project, with the show “so specifically about North and South Korea.”
In response, Jinny said: “So, I think we’re gonna see if maybe we can make that divide a little bit more symbolic. We’re looking into sci-fi.”
“Well, you need a world, right?” Bela added. “Because it is the culture clash of two people who don’t fit together but were meant for each other.”
The K-drama, which gained popularity in 2020, centered on the cross-border romance of South Korean heiress Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye Jin) and North Korean military captain Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), after she winds up in the restricted country during a paragliding accident. The American adaptation was first announced in 2021, but its release date has yet to be revealed.
