In a move to curb ostentatious displays of wealth, China's major social media platforms have suspended the accounts of several high-profile influencers known for flaunting their luxurious lifestyles. The crackdown, which began in mid-May, targets content deemed to promote "negative value-oriented" behaviors such as materialism and wealth worship.

Among those affected are personalities such as Wang Hongquan, known as wanghongquanxing, Baoyu Jiajie, also known as Sister Abalone, and Bo Gongzi. These influencers gained millions of followers by showcasing their extravagant lifestyles, including designer handbags, lavish jewelry, and luxurious homes. Their content, while popular, has been criticized for spreading unhealthy values and creating societal discontent.
Wang Hongquan, often dubbed "China’s Kim Kardashian," had over 4 million followers on the popular Chinese social media platform Douyin. His videos frequently featured expensive jewelry and luxury brand events, which led to the suspension of his accounts on Weibo and Douyin.
Similarly, Sister Abalone, a wealthy socialite from Guangdong, gained fame for showcasing her 2,000 square-meter mansion and other luxurious possessions. Her Douyin account, which had over 2 million followers, was also suspended.
Bo Gongzi, known for his collection of Hermes bags, faced a similar fate. His Douyin and Weibo accounts were also banned, putting an end to his regular postings about high-end gifts and lavish living.
The crackdown aligns with President Xi Jinping's "common prosperity" campaign that aims to reduce the wealth gap and promote more equitable wealth distribution. The campaign was initially focused on alleviating rural poverty but has since evolved to address issues of excessive wealth and the social divide.
While some argue that influencers are simply sharing their lives and not breaking any laws, the authorities maintain that such displays contribute to social division and unrealistic aspirations. This crackdown reflects the government's broader agenda of fostering social cohesion and ensuring that wealth is not disproportionately showcased or celebrated.
