The Netflix original series was recently met with allegations of plagiarism, fresh from its release on the platform. Netizens drew the show’s similarities to the action video game Death Stranding, created by Japanese developer Hideo Kojima and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The 2023 Korean series delved into a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by air pollution, where the survival of humanity lies with a group of deliverymen—dubbed as “knights”—the only channels to receive their basic necessities. Kim Woo Bin portrays 5-8, a legendary knight among their flock whose skill in combat earned its revered reputation.
Death Stranding, on the other hand, is backdropped by a war-torn United States, where the ravage of destructive creatures remains clear in the land. The video game’s protagonist is Sam Porter Bridges, a courier who delivers supplies to isolated colonies.
Netflix remained concise in its response to the plagiarism allegations, as its production company reminded that the series is an adaptation from a different source material.
“Black Knight was produced based on the webtoon of the same name by Lee Yun Kyun, which began in 2016,” the message reads, in a translation by Soompi.
The adapted TV series follows much of the original storyline, although the webtoon focused on the female character Sawol, as opposed to the show’s protagonist 5-8.
Black Knight is streaming on Netflix.
