The sun’s hello and goodbye are two of the most popular subjects of photography in the era of the smartphone, and probably moreso when taken against a popular location or landmark.
The people of Mornings.co.uk conducted a study in November 2021 to determine which spots in the world are the most popular for sun chasers. They scanned Tripadvisor and searched the Things to Do section using the keywords “sunrise” and “sunset.” The places that had the most mentions of those keywords came out on top.
LOOK: The best places to catch the sunrise and sunset in the Philippines (and in the world)
In the Philippines, the best place to watch the sunrise seems to be Kiltepan in Sagada. If you’ve ever been there, this is easy enough to understand. When the conditions are right—the fog lifts and you see a stunning sea of clouds—the place looks like a dream, and definitely worth getting up at dawn for.
On the flipside, the best place for catching the sunset in the Philippines is White Beach in Boracay. If you’re lucky enough to be in Boracay on a clear day, it’s virtually impossible not to get your phone to capture the kaleidoscope of colors at sundown—from bright orange and crimson red to burnt sienna and even cool purple. You can’t get a lousy picture when you’re at White Beach at sunset.
Elsewhere in the world, the number one destination to watch the sunrise is Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, with 10,404 mentions, followed by Haleakala Crater in Hawaii, USA (3,933), the Taj Mahal in India (2,819), Borobudur Temple in Indonesia (1,600), and Uluru or what was formerly known as Ayer’s Rock in Australia (1,085).
The best spot to cap off a day of sightseeing in the world is Mallory Square in Key West, Florida, USA with 9,811 mentions. Rounding out the top five are Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE (5,275), Piazzale Michelangelo in Venice, Italy (3,440), Tana Lot Temple in Indonesia (3,265), and Mindil Beach in Australia (2,701). Interestingly, Angkor Wat in Cambodia is at number six in the sunsets list with 2,596 mentions.
