The Netflix original K-drama A Time Called You has quickly caught viewers’ attention since its release, securing a spot in the streaming service’s local top 10. Aside from its heartfelt and tear-inducing plot, its star-studded cast is also one highlight of the series–including an unexpected cameo from one actor!

During one of the drama’s episodes, viewers are treated to an important glimpse of Destined With You actor, SF9’s Rowoon. The 12-episode series delves into the story of Jeon Yeo Bin’s Han Jun-hee, who, after being sent back to the past, meets a doppelganger of her deceased boyfriend, played by Ahn Hyo Seop.
In A Time Called You’s eighth episode, Rowoon appears as the character Tae Ha, the best friend of Ahn Hyo Seop’s character who shares his romantic feelings. Despite their tragic ending, the pair share a poignant moment as they quietly acknowledge each other’s affections.
In a recent interview with director Kim Jin Won, the filmmaker revealed that Rowoon was cast due to his real-life close relationship with Hyo Seop, explaining that he needed someone whom the actor already had a comfortable camaraderie with.
During the initial casting process, the director had asked Hyo Seop if he had any suggestions as to who should play the role. “I asked Ahn, ‘Are you good friends with anyone in the industry?’ And that’s how we started discussing Rowoon,” Jin Won said, in a translation by Koreaboo. “Ahn suggested, ‘Should I try getting in touch with him?’”
After contacting Rowoon’s management and having discussions with the team, the idol-actor gladly accepted the role. According to Hyo Seop, the two had been friends since they were younger.
“We worked on about three episodes worth with Rowoon. He wanted the scene to turn out really strong, especially since he decided to be in it,” the director said. “The three of us communicated non-stop about how to shoot the scene.”
The A Time Called You director also revealed that Rowoon wasn’t paid a single cent for the cameo, as per his request. Instead, the actor requested that his earnings be used for a meal truck, to be sent to none other than Hyo Seop.
“And I would specifically love this to be publicized: Rowoon didn’t take any money for the appearance,” the director said. “Instead, Rowoon asked that Ahn gets a meal truck sent in Rowoon’s name.”
